What are porcelain crowns?
If tooth decay or damage becomes extensive and painful, Dr. Russell West may suggest a porcelain crown to save your tooth. A porcelain crown is tooth-shaped cap that is placed over a damaged tooth to restore its size, shape, and function. By making the dental crown from porcelain, we are also able to maintain the beautiful aesthetic of your natural smile. Porcelain dental crowns in Valencia, California are most often used to:
- Repair moderate to severe tooth decay
- Prevent a tooth from breaking apart
- Hold a cracked or fractured tooth together
- Anchor a dental bridge
- Complete a dental implant
We will take a close look at your smile to determine if a porcelain crown will benefit your smile most.
How are porcelain crowns made?
It normally takes two visits to our dental office to make a porcelain crown and permanently cement it into place. During your first visit, we will gently reshape your tooth through a buffing process in order to design a crown that will fit perfectly over it. Molds of your smile are sent to a dental laboratory, where your crown is made. A temporary crown will be placed on your tooth while you are waiting for your final crown to be made. Once back at our office, our skilled dentist will ensure the crown fits perfectly and cement it into place.
